Not the Day I Hoped For | Tahoe Rim Trail Thru-Hike Day 11
Seems like this day on the Tahoe Rim Trail was doomed from the start. There are a few bright lights to be thankful for, and I'm counting my blessing as a very lucky hiker.

Leaving Tahoe City Behind | Tahoe Rim Trail Thru-Hike Day 10
Просмотров 33716 часов назад
After a well-deserved break in Tahoe City, I continue my clockwise Tahoe Rim Trail thru-hike. I languished in town until checkout time, savoring every moment of respite. Then I hiked down the road and up a rocky hill, counting the days until this backpacking trip was over while wishing it would never end. The views exceeded my expectations, but things got a little dicey up there. Will it all be...
Finally a Town Day! Hello Tahoe City | Tahoe Rim Trail Day 9

I made it to Tahoe City in record time this morning. I was desperate for a break in town - and a shower - after 9 straight days of hiking. Things didn't work out quite how I imagined, but my visit to Tahoe City turned out to be a lovely NERO day anyway. I Could Use a Little Magic | Tahoe Rim Trail Thru-Hike Day 8

I had a restless night after thinking I heard a bear playing with my bear can at 2:30 am. Was I wrong? Maybe. Even so, I'm excited about the day as I hike closer to Tahoe City for a much-needed town day. Of course, I have to find a campsite before I get there, and I often have FOMO that I'll miss out on the best spot to pitch my tent. 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥 ᴘᴀᴛʀᴇᴏɴ: www.patreon.com/joyfulrambler ...

My second day backpacking through the Desolation Wilderness starts with a big climb up to Dick's Pass. I started just after sunrise and enjoyed a beautiful morning hike. I enjoyed a swim in a gorgeous alpine lake and was less happy about 3 "bonus miles" to reach a camping spot at Richardson La...

OK, so I knew I would be passing the Big Meadow Trailhead today, but I had no idea that meant the Tahoe Rim Trail would wind through miles of meadows...all day long! My first full day on the Tahoe Rim trail, I already have a new friend! We're off to search for her water cache, and I'm hopeful there's water in the bathrooms at Kingsbury North Trailhead. Love your vids, I'm 61, recently retired and just returned to backpacking. Getting ready for my first thru-hike of over 5 nights, working my way up to bigger and better things! BTW, I have the 475 which is plenty big enough for 5 days of food, as well as an Ursa sack for those areas not requiring a cannister.

Such a bummer. I was on what was going to be 2 weeks on the AT with my friend and hiking partner in July, when she broke her foot, she has osteoporosis and the pounding on rocks led to her fracture. She is hoping to be back on trail this week and I am hoping to join her again for two weeks in September. But when this stuff happens it is such a disappointment

I learned the hard way. Got lost in a national forest doing a short hike that turned into an all day adventure because I got lost. Not much equipment. Thankfully my dog and I made it out 15 miles later. Good thing I didn’t panic and the trails were pretty clear. Now I only hike nature centers and clearly marked trails.

Well it’s a tough break but it’s not a failure. Your knee gave out. You didnt’t tell it to, it just did. My foot gave out. Arthritis and a cyst on my middle toe. I put up with it but it bothers me when I go on a hike. About five miles and it would rub and give me issues. So this week I had surgery. I won’t lie, right now hurts like hell to walk. So here I sit in my recliner with one leg propped up and my cat curled up on the other. Tomorrow will be a new day. Every day you wake up is a good one! I got knee pain on downhills too. Maybe we’ll just have to put the knee braces on going downhill and use the poles. Just how it is. But I’ve followed every post and it looked like a really nice hike. Beautiful scenery. So get well soon and plan your next trip!

Awe...I hate you got injured and I hope you can recover easily. It's understandable to feel like a failure in the moment but what I see is how blessed you are to get to backpack and in an awesome place! Life is notorious for throwing curve balls. Lord knows I've had my share and will continue to. It's hard to deal with at times but sometimes the curve balls either protect us from something else or they lead us to something better. Just want you know I think you're badass to go out on these hikes in unknown territory by yourself. That's no failure!

So sorry that happened. I shared with you via email a similar recent experience where I had to call for some help (for the first time in a lifetime of hiking everywhere). I was initially very disappointed in myself. But then, after reflection, I realized several things: Things happen beyond your control. The real goal to make it out intact to live and hike another day. I am older and my body won't do what it used to, but I am still ahead of 98% of folks my age that don't get out at all. Everyone needs help sooner or later and I should be greatful there was a rescue team to help me. They themselves told me I didn't do anything wrong (they were very kind) and said I actually did a lot of things right. You didn't do anything wrong. And, like you, I still walked out on my own two feet! After I get past my wife's "grounding" me a bit from the deep wilderness hikes, I will soon be back out there! You have nothing to feel bad about. Go read the speech "The Man in the Arena" by Roosevelt. Then rest, recover and get back out there!

I'm sorry about the knee injury. I once had a painful knee injury after a camping trip that hurt so bad, I knew I'd done severe damage but my doctor said it was tendonitis and after a week or so, it got better and it's never come back. I hope that is your experience too.

  • @thorncliffe9063

Congratulations on your achievement so far. You haven't failed. You have taken the sensible step to make sure that you will be fit enough to complete the walk in the future. It will still be there in the coming months / year. You may have done more permanent damage if you had continued, resulting in an end to your hiking altogether. Always look after your body - it will look after you in the future.

I can’t hike any more without my walking stick or trekking poles. It’s the downhills that get me. My right knee hurts too much without using them. Advil or Aleve is what you need, not Tylenol. Plus maybe some major muscle conditioning before any hike. It’s not good to get back on another trail before your joints are ready. Or go more slowly and listen to your limbs.

This post and comments are a tad funny to me. I'm 62 and I don't consider myself 'older', whatever that means. I've been hiking, camping etc for 50+ years. Typically it is the newbs that find themselves in trouble, age has little to do w/it. This has seemingly increased since the COVID nonsense. I'll take an 'older' hiking partner w/some experience anyday, over most anyone else.
